Adventures in the Theatre Illuminata by Sound-of-Heaven Adventures in the Theatre Illuminata by Sound-of-Heaven
Hang in there with me, guys, this is probably gonna be a long one. ^^; This is my first entry for the Fairytale of Foxfans contest. I have two more in the works which I hope I can finish in time, but this one is by far my favorite so I bumped it up from third to first priority. What I like about this one is that unlike my other two, which put the Foxfans in roles of characters from the stories, here I have the Foxfans as themselves just dumped into a book universe to see what they do and how they interact with the characters. What fun! :D

About the book

The book I chose for this is one of my favorites from my collection: Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev. It is the first book in the Theatre Illuminata trilogy, about a girl named Beatrice Shakespeare Smith (aka Bertie) who has been raised in a magical theatre where the characters from every play ever written come to life to perform their parts. We meet Bertie as she is trying to find herself a place in the theatre so she won't be sent away from the only home she's ever known. Over the course of her life, she has caused a lot of trouble for the Theatre Manager just by being the rambunctious child, and now teenager, that she is, and now he wants her to start to be of use to the theatre or leave. She decides to become a Director and prove she's capable by staging a version of Hamlet set in ancient Egypt, even though the Players (all the play characters, that is) generally don't deal well with changes to their plays. (Hamlet's mother Gertrude has an especially hard time with it. :giggle:) While that is going on, another, far more serious problem comes up that threatens the entire theatre's existence. I won't say anymore because I don't want to spoil it for anyone who might be interested in reading, but since I know my summarizing skills are not the best, I will also give you this link to the series' website in case you want to learn more: www.theatre-illuminata.com/ Also, here is the summary from the back of the book that sounds much nicer and more exciting than mine:

Enter Stage Right

Beatrice Shakespeare Smith (Bertie): Our heroine.

Nate: A dashing pirate who will do anything to protect Bertie.

Cobweb, Moth, Mustardseed, and Peaseblossom: Four tiny, mischievous fairies, and Bertie's loyal sidekicks.

Ariel: A seductive air spirit. Disaster follows in his wake, but Bertie simply cannot resist him.

Welcome to the Theatre Illuminata, where the characters of every play ever written can be found behind the curtain. The actors are bound to the Theatre by The Book, an ancient and magical tome of scripts. Bertie is not one of the actors, but they are her family. And she is about to lose them all because The Book has been threatened, and along with it the Theatre. It's the only home Bertie had ever known, and she has to find a way to save it. But first, there's the small problem of two handsome men, both vying for her attention. The course of true love never did run smooth. . . .

See, much better than mine. I forgot to mention the romance part, which I also like , but mainly I just love books that are about books, or plays or any kind of literature. Books that are kind of self aware, if you know what I mean. I loved this book so much I bought the whole series! :D But although the latter two books show us the wide world beyond the theatre and even more adventures, there's something I love about the first book just being about the theatre itself. That's why I chose to put the Foxfans in this book rather than the others. Though I could easily imagine them tagging along through the whole series, I think they would first have a lot of fun right here at the beginning.

About the Foxfans

Here I'm going to talk about why I chose these particular Foxfans to go into this book. We'll go from top to bottom, left to right. That means Libellus is first! ^_^ Now, I didn't put him in here just because he's the contest mascot or even because I super LOVE his design (which I do!) but because I feel he would be the one to get them into this situation in the first place, both in the sense of them being in the book at all and in the sense of them being piled up next to a book on a pedestal and attacked by fairies. I'll explain more about that later. ;)

Next is Kage. Now, I will admit to you, not all of these Foxfans were planned to be included way in advance like Libellus and a few of the others. For some of them, I just sketched the pose into the drawing without knowing exactly who is was until later. Kage was one of those. I had the second Foxfan from the top of the pile growling at one of the fairies, but it wasn't until later that I decided to give Kage that spot. After reading his bio, I saw that he is protective of his friends, so I knew that he probably would growl at a fairy if it was flying around and dive bombing him and the others.

House was a real surprise. I probably would not have picked him originally because I was a bit intimidated by trying to draw his design, but once I drew that pose into the sketch, I knew it had to be him. The expression just reminded me so much of the one on his ref, but looked a bit more annoyed than that one. He's a little peeved because Kage, in his protective zeal, has knocked the little prop crown right off House's head with his tail.

Kaze was planned from the beginning in honor of one of Bertie's friends/love interests, Ariel. Ariel is the air spirit from Shakespeare's The Tempest and he can control the wind. On some level, he is the wind. I could just imagine that Kaze might make friends with Ariel and hang around him a lot, playing with winds and stuff. In one of the later books, when they are outside the Theatre, Ariel has to fight off some wolves with his winds, and Kaze and his Bag O'Wind could definitely help with that! But that's getting ahead of myself, since we are just dealing with the Foxfans' initial adventures in the Theatre. Still, you can see how awesome things could get later, right? :D

Riptide was another one I wanted to use on this from the start. She's here in honor of Bertie's other friend/love interest, Nate. Nate is a pirate from The Little Mermaid who appears in the first scene of his play and has only on line. I imagine that, like Kaze and Ariel, Riptide and Nate could bond over their shared piratey interests and become friends, too. For a long stretch of time beginning in the first book and going into the second, Nate is separated from the others and in danger, and they are trying to save him. Riptide would be very worried about her friend and do everything she could to help find him.

Amiable's inclusion was a later decision. The Foxfan in her positon in the drawing was going to be wearing a feather boa and fancy earrings, and I thought out of all the Foxfans in the contest, she would look the best in them. Also, since she is the themed on Burning Passion, I thought she would enjoy being around for the whole Nate/Bertie/Ariel romance triangle, at times watching it like a romance novel unfolding before her, and at others trying to give those silly kids a nudge in the right direction.

For the last three - Cherise, Dallas, and Momo - they were all planned from the beginning, but not necessarily for book-related reasons. Honestly, Cherise's and Dallas's owners have been so nice to me and are great to talk to, and their Foxfans are so cute, that I've been wanting to draw their babies for them for quite a while, and this was a perfect opportunity. I have also always wanted to draw the adorable Momo, whose design I love even more after drawing it myself, and since she is the mascot of all Foxfandom (hey, that should be a real word! Idea ), I can't help looking at her as a kind of leader of the Foxfans and thinking that she should be included. I made Cherise jumping up to try to catch the fairy because she likes bugs and I thought his resemblance to a butterfly would entice her. Momo is also enchanted by the weird butterfly bug-people and wants to catch one so bad, she's willing to chase it anywhere! Dallas is politely waiting to see what Libellus will find in The Book, but is startled when Momo takes off after the fairy. If Momo gets into trouble, Dallas will be sure to help! ^_^

The Foxfan's Adventures

I feel it's important to tell you how I imagine the Foxfans got sent into this book and what they do with their time in the story, since it informed many of my decisions for what to put in the drawing. So here goes!

One stormy day, Libellus was looking through some new books he'd just acquired and found this really interesting one about a magical theatre, so he started reading it and he liked it so much that he invited some of the other Foxfans to listen to him read it aloud. While he was reading there was suddenly a bright white flash! It might have been a lightning strike or something else, but in any case it temporarily blinded everyone. When the Foxfans' vision finally cleared, they looked around in confusion. Their surroundings were completely different! At first they were afraid, but upon noticing a few things that they had just heard Libellus read about, they realized they were inside the book! After the initial shock wore off, they forgot about their fear in their excitement and amazement. They were all eager to explore this magical theatre, so that's what they did.

First they ran off the stage where they had entered the new world and into the backstage area. Cherise's sharp nose, which was always tuned into the scent of sweets, led them right into the Green Room, where the Players went to have a snack between scenes. By the Theatre's magic, there was always food there, and now was no exception, but luckily it was empty of people. After stuffing themselves with cakes and other treats and making a bit of a mess, the Foxfans set out to see more of the rooms they had heard about in the story. They visited the Wardrobe Department, where they opened all the trunks and tried on lots of outfits. Amiable found a pair of earrings and a feather boa that she loved so much, she refused to take them off, and Dallas found a cute little hat and a pearl necklace - they were not her usual style, but they were so pretty that she decided to wear them anyway. They also found their way to the Props Department, where they had delightful mock battles with prop swords, and where Riptide found a small sack of gold coins that she felt compelled to keep despite a quick bite to one of them telling her they were not real. House also found something there - a tiny crown just his size, which he put on and declared himself the Poker King. Everyone laughed good-naturedly at that, but House just continued to preen and pose in front of a mirror; he was very proud of that crown.

It was just pure luck for the Foxfans that they had managed to do all of their exploring up to that point without running into any of the book's characters. They had been having so much fun that they hadn't considered the mess they were making and how those who ran the Theatre might react. It was while they were still playing with the props that they began to hear the commotion. There was a shriek as the Wardrobe Mistress saw what had become of her impeccably ironed and arranged costumes, and several smaller shrieks as certain fairies saw what had become of their beloved cakes. The Foxfans looked at each other with wide eyes, and as one they all bolted from the room, not forgetting to grab their treasures to take with them. In their panic, they all ran in different directions and got a bit lost. What followed was a long but merry chase, during which they somehow managed to evade capture every time they were spotted. By the time they all reassembled on the stage, they were out of breath and exhausted and it felt like every single person in the Theatre was after them.

Momo said they should find a place to hide and lay low until this all blew over, but as she said this, Libellus happened to look over to Stage Left and notice something he hadn't seen before. It was a book. A big, beautiful book sitting on a pedestal toward the back of the stage, just in front of a proscenium arch, and emitting an almost undetectable golden glow. Of course! How could he forget that? It was none other than The Book, the magical tome that made the Theatre's existence possible and supposedly held every play that was ever written. He had to get a closer look! Calling to his friends, Libellus ran eagerly over to The Book and begged the others to give him a boost. Kage reminded him that the story said no one was supposed to touch The Book, that not even Bertie would touch it, but Libellus couldn't resist and insisted he would be careful.

So, the Foxfans stacked themselves up on top of one another. Amiable and Riptide, who wanted to count her fake gold coins anyway, volunteered to be the base, and next went Kaze, House, Kage, and finally Libellus. Momo, Cherise, and Dallas sat and watched with a mixture of curiosity and foreboding. But when Libellus finally opened The Book and began leafing through it, nothing bad happened immediately and they relaxed. The other Foxfans began asking Libellus what was in The Book, and he was starting to tell them when there was a sudden shout, and four tiny winged creatures darted onto the stage at full speed and flew at the Foxfans. One started tugging on Libellus's ear and yelling for him to get away from The Book, but he was so captivated that he didn't even notice. Another repeatedly dove at the Foxfans lower down in the pile, pushing at them and hitting them with tiny fists until the tower began to wobble. Kage, afraid they would all fall and be hurt, growled and snapped at the fairy, startling it enough to stop its onslaught temporarily. Cherise saw the fairy stop moving and, now that she could see it clearly, was so strongly reminded of a butterfly that she couldn't resist jumping up and trying to catch it. Momo felt the same when she saw the third fairy and quickly jumped up to chase it as it flew away in terror. Dallas was startled by this, but after a moment's hesitation she decided to go and help Momo in case she got into trouble.

Nobody noticed the fourth fairy, who, after trying to take Riptide's coins from her and being sent flying by a hit from her fantail for his trouble, took off into the wings to get help. However, everyone noticed when he returned with someone who bellowed loudly at them to stop. All of them froze, both Foxfans and fairies. In the split second before the tower toppled down, the Foxfans saw that the bellower had been Nate the pirate, who they remembered from the book, and with him were the other two main characters, Bertie and Ariel. At least the fairy had fetched them and not the Wardrobe Mistress or the Prop Master; perhaps these characters would be more lenient. And in the next moment, the Foxfans found themselves on the floor, groaning in pain from their bruises. But they were back on their feet as quickly as possible, staring at the humans, spirit, and fairies with apprehension.

Then, at a signal from Momo, all nine Foxfans jumped up, swished their fantails, and disappeared. There was a great clattering as nine ordinary fans clattered to the stage floor. There was shocked silence for a few moments and no one moved. But then Bertie, curious, slowly walked up to the fan that had once been Cherise. She turned it over and examined it in confusion while voicing her questions to Nate, Ariel, and the fairies. Of course, none of them understood this any better than she did, but Nate at least wanted her to leave them alone and let the Stage Manager deal with it. However, it was at that moment that Bertie opened the fan in what must have been just the right way, and out tumbled Cherise into her hands. Cherise looked up a Bertie with a spooked expression and trembled. For several heartbeats, the two just looked at each other. The other Foxfans, still on the floor, began to peek out from their fans in worry. Kage was ready to run up and bite Bertie's leg if he had to to save Cherise.

But the tense moment passed as Bertie seemed to make a decision and slowly, carefully shifted Cherise to one hand and held out the other for the Foxfan to sniff. Cherise looked uncertainly at the peace offering, then at Bertie, and then back at the hand. But then she, too, seemed to make a decision as she slowly, carefully sniffed at the human's hand and memorized her scent. Then she gently nudged Bertie's hand and insistently wedged her head under it, asking to be petted. After all, what were human friends for? Bertie seemed delighted and called the young men and the fairies over to meet the strange but adorable little creature. They obliged, rather reluctantly on Nate's part, but soon they were all gathered around Bertie and admiring and petting Cherise, who was soaking up the attention and thinking about how she could get these people to give her some treats next. The atmosphere on the stage was decidedly friendlier now, and the other Foxfans also came out of hiding and crowded around the humans' feet to demand their share of the attention.

Bertie and her friends talked among themselves as they got acquainted with the Foxfans, and although the latter could not understand all of the words, they understood enough to know that Bertie and Co. had decided they weren't harmful and were going to attempt to smooth things over with those in charge so the Foxfans could stay. They did manage to convey to Libellus why he mist never touch The Book again, and to assuage his guilt with assurances of their forgiveness as long as there was no repeat performance, and with the promise of other things to read. Nate was already admiring the treasure map on Riptide's fantail and talking about the pirate adventures he could take her on on the set of The Little Mermaid. Ariel had curiously opened Kaze's Bag O'Wind, and upon being hit directly in the face with the strongest wind he'd ever felt aside from his own, he thought that the two of them might get up to some nice mischief together. The fairies were playing with Momo, flying around and letting her almost catch them before spinning away. Yes, they were all going to be good friends!

There was just one more thing, Bertie said. What to call them all? At this comment, Libellus had a brilliant idea. Remembering that he'd read in the story, he called down the set for The Little Mermaid. This mystified Bertie and Co. because all they had heard was a little bark, but apparently the Theatre itself spoke Foxfan and understood him, because it obliged. Soon, the stage was sporting a pirate ship, ocean water, and a fairly good amount of sand. It was this last that Libellus wanted. He instructed the other Foxfans to sit in the sand, and then he went around to each one and pawed at the sand in front of them. Bertie, Nate, Ariel, and the fairies watched curiously, and in a few moments Bertie gasped when she realized the little brown fox was writing names. MOMO. DALLAS. HOUSE. KAZE. KAGE. CHERISE. AMIABLE. RIPTIDE. Then he sat himself down in front of the others and pawed at the sand again. He wrote two words. In front of himself, LIBELLUS. And in front of that, before himself and all his friends, FOXFANS.

Bertie gaped in wonder, and then a grin slowly spread across her face. Her friends seemed amazed, too. Libellus smiled to himself. He didn't know exactly how he and his friends had gotten here, or if there was any way to get home to all of the other Foxfans again. But for now, he was actually living in a book and it was like a dream come true! He was going to enjoy it while it lasted, and he was sure it would be a grand experience with his friends both old and new at his side. Yes, he though, all the world's a stage and all the world's a story, and this is just the beginning of our adventures!

THE END

Whew! Boy, that was fun to write! Just so you know, I didn't edit any of that, so I apologize for any and all mistakes. It's just to add to the drawing, anyway. Hope you enjoyed it! Now on to the credits!

Okay, I think that's all I have to say. I've been typing for hours and I'm exhausted. :flop: Time to sleep! And hopefully I can get at least one more entry done before the deadline. Wish me luck, people! Love you all! :blowkiss:

I have to comment again! :D
Congratulations on winning one of the prizes! As I understood from the contest results journal, the judge was considering awarding you the first prize! :excited: revamp... again. Too bad it didn't happen, it would be totally deserved! Still, I'm glad your effort, imagination and knowledge of foxfans were acknowledged after all.

Thank you so much! Yeah, I was hoping to get a Foxfan coin this time, but at least I did get another prize, which does have some pretty good stuff in it. I think there were a couple other people who were close to getting first, too, but it's cool that I was one of the ones being considered. It's great that they could see how hard I worked! Overall, I am very happy! :D Maybe next time there is a contest I will manage to do even better. And now I'm in the mood to draw more Foxfans, so I'm thinking of doing a YCH for them, too! I'd like to try to get a little bit more involved in the group.

Thank you so much! :happybounce: I'm so glad you enjoyed it, and that you think I did a good job with the characters. This was a ton of fun to do! I am a book lover myself, so the theme is right up my alley. Thanks for taking the time to read the story and for the lovely comment, and for having the contest in the first place!

Just finished another entry, so it should be up by tomorrow. Then I shall scramble and try to finish the last one! Run Away

Thank you! This is my first time using textures, and I must say I like it! If I had tried to draw a curtain, I'm sure it would have just been plain red and awkwardly shaded and everything. :bleh: But this way I just put the curtain texture up there and did some shading and highlighting to it, and there you go! It helps a lot if you want intricate patterns on it and can't figure out how to draw them, or don't have time to do it all by hand. I saw another entry that used textures, so that's why I tried it out. I like learning new things! :D

Well, my story takes place before the action of the book really starts. It just focuses on the Foxfans running around the Theatre and having fun, and then meeting some book characters in the end and showing how they make friends with the Foxfans. There isn't anything in it that would spoil the book, so feel free to read it if you have time. ^_^ And you should totally check out the books! They're pretty awesome. I hope you'll enjoy them.

Wow! I could never handle reading more than one book at a time because I keep losing track of details in one or the other. It's the same thing with video games for me. Yeah, definitely finish those first.

Love OMG THIS IS JUST AWESOME! La la la la The unbelievable amount of effort, creativity, and thought put into this entry is obvious through your art and artist description I think I've fainted.  I am amazingly stunned by the love and work you put into this entry. It's so cool how you're going through this route of putting the foxfans into the story's environment. You almost wrote your own book :D (Big Grin) It's also obvious that you love Foxfans.

I especially love that you have Cherise playing the fairy! Hug She looks so curious and intrigued with the new world that she is exploring. :happybounce: It really matches her personality of doing bad things with good intentions. Thank you so much for putting Cherise in this extraordinarily wonderful entry. Heart

Good luck to you. :fingerscrossed: I can't wait to see your other two entries. Clap Brava!

Eeeee, THANK YOU!! :happybounce: :excited: I'm so glad it shows through! I do love Foxfans, so so much. They're my favorite CS and the one that got me started collecting CS in the first place - since I haven't been able to get one yet, I started getting other fox-based CS to cheer myself up about it. Drawing this and writing the story has made me love them even more, because now I can see even more how much they can do and how much fun they can be after sending them on this adventure. I love how they can interact with each other and other characters! It's much better than just looking at the drawings other artists do of them. I'll have to do more fanart and maybe even commissions of other people's Foxfans! I just want to draw them more now.

I'm so glad you like what I did with Cherise! She was a lot of fun both to draw and to write. I love her personality! You're welcome. I'm happy to have finally had the opportunity to draw her. She's a darling! ^_^

Oh, thank you so much! I'm so nervous but also excited. :fingerscrossed: I'm going to try to finish the others, but even if I don't manage it, I did go all out on this one and give it my best, so at least I have this one in the running either way.

You should do commissions. You draw them so cute :D (Big Grin)
I'm so curious what you're other two entries are :eager: by darkmoon3636

Status update: I've actually made great strides in my entry (or
entries depending if Photoshop will save it as one entry) but I'm
going to submit it at the last minute to ensure that I've done
everything I could to make it as great as yours. Love

I think I will! :D Maybe a nice little YCH/YFH to start with, and only like 3-5 slots so I don't overwhelm myself. Crap, I have SO much I want to do after this contest! I hope I actually end up doing all of it.

Even if I don't finish the other 2 entries in time for the contest, I will finish and post them eventually. The sketches came out really well for the most part, so it would be a shame not to finish them. The second entry, which I have now switched to last priority, was supposed to be a short comic of like 1-3 pages, but due to the time crunch, if I get to it I will probably only post the first panel, which is my favorite anyway. But however it goes, I will try to do the rest of the comic at some point. I've never done a comic before, so it should be...interesting, I guess. I have no idea how to do panel shapes and positions the right way. ^^;

Ooh, I am so excited to see what you've come up with! :excited: revamp... again. Your entries for everything are always so cute and well-made.

And with Christmas coming up, it could be a popular YCH to do.
Give yourself ample time when it comes to YCHs.

It's okay, paneling is an art all on its own. Although I don't think
they'll care too much for paneling. Comic is a good way to show
a lot of effort into it.

Holy COW this is a long description *there is no emote appropriate for my reaction FFFFF* but I got through it! Your entry for this contest is purely amazing. All the thought, time, and detail put into this is honestly. Well. Stunning to say the least LOL I can't imagine any other entry with this much background and effort put into it ahahaha xD I'm glad that Riptide could have an interesting role in your piece, and your welcome for me putting her up in the journal! :> Really, I enjoyed the story you put behind this too <3 and each role thought out for each Foxfan and just. All the details sdjkfhkjsdf

Amiable and Riptide just only caring about the gold coins is too cute xDD And then Rip slapping away the fairy trying to steal her swag PFFTT <333 Much love for the FoxFan tower too!

Yeah, I know. ^^; But the contest journal said to put in the description anything we thought was important to know about the entry, so that's what I did. It seemed best to be thorough. I just hope :iconbusbyart: reads the whole thing during judging to really get a feel for what I was trying to do. Thank you so much for taking the time to read it! It means a lot to me.

Aw, thanks so much! I thought about the story behind it a lot while I was working on it. Since I put the Foxfans in the book as themselves and not into book roles, I felt I needed to make them their own roles so they could really become part of it. It was a lot of fun to do! :D I'm glad you like what I did with Riptide, too! Gin would not have been as good a fit, I don't think. Besides, Riptide's colors and design are just lovely and I really enjoyed drawing her. I can't thank you enough for letting me use her!

Oh, good! :phew: I know a wall of text like that can put people off from reading, but I'm glad you did. ^_^ Oh, btw I just realized that I put thanks to Belliko-art and Strixiart for letting me use Riptide when it should have been YOU and Strixiart! ^^; Ergh, I blame the fact that it was like 11 PM and I had been typing for about 3 or 4 hours straight and was starting to lose my mind. Sorry about that, but I've fixed it! And thanks again! :D

Your welcome! It's just a shame I didn't submit Riptide sooner xDD but yea, we all know that story. I love her colors too, they are normally something I wouldn't stick on a character but maybe that's what makes me love her the most. She is very different compared to my other characters x3 ahhhh I hope you place in the contest! Seriously, this effort. Thousand times over <33 no way I'd could come up with something like this.

She's one of the most interesting-looking Foxfans for sure, and she has the prettiest hair! Or at least she's tied with Hima for prettiest hair. :giggle:  Oh thank you, I hope so, too! :D I hardly dare to dream of 1st place, but I want a Foxfan of my own more than anything, so I gave it my best and now all I can do is cross my fingers and try to finish my other entries. All the prizes are amazing, though, so I would be happy with any place, but I do hope I at least luck out in the raffle. I have some nice ideas for MYOs, and the kiwi Foxfan is just adorable. Aw, I bet you could if you used a book you really love! I think that helped me.
